Zoo: Day Three

Feeding Time

Children will learn about the types of food animals eat and that we call animals who eat plants Herbivores and animals who eat meat, carnivores.

Book:
Curious George Feeds the Animals by Margaret and H.A. Rey
Talk about how the zoo keeper was the one who should be feeding the animals. Why did they get upset at George for feeding his snacks to the animals? (Because it wasn't the right thing for the animals to be eating.)

Lesson:
What do animals eat?

Show pictures of different zoo animals. Ask the children what they think each animal eats.

Talk about how some animals in the zoo eat plants and some eat meat.

Separate the pictures of animals into their correct categories.

Animals that eat plants only are called "herbivores."

Animals that eat meat are called "carnivores."

It's important that animals eat the correct food, just like it's important for us to eat the right food to keep us strong and healthy.

Game:

Feed the seals: use a bucket and paper fish. Have children toss the fish into a hula hoop or large basket to feed the seals, just like the zoo keeper did in the Curious George book.

Feeding Time:

Graham Cracker Cages - Spread peanut butter over a graham cracker. Lay an animal cracker (or frosted animal cookies) on top. Put black licorice strings over top to make the cage's bars. *I didn't have the licorice strings, so we just put the animals on top----Eat and enjoy!!!
