Hens of a Different Color Activity:
Print out 9 hens. (Here's one version.) I copied it and shrunk it to fit 4 on a page.
Color--or have children color--the hens to match the poem below. Tell the story, laying out the correctly colored hen. Have children match the hens to their color.
Hens of a Different ColorThis little hen is BLACK ( hold up black

She stands in the barnyard by a big
hay stack.
This little hen is RED (hold up red hen)
She is very tired and won't get out of
bed.
This little hen is BROWN (hold up
brown hen)
She is feeling glad and wearing a
crown.
This little hen is YELLOW (hold up
yellow hen)
She's friends with the rooster; he's a
handsome fellow.
This little hen is WHITE (hold up white

She dances and plays, oh what a sight.
This little hen is PURPLE (hold up the

She spends her day running around in
circles.
This little hen is GREEN (hold up green

She is the silliest hen I've ever seen.
This little hen is BLUE (hold up blue hen)
She lays eggs for me and you.
This little hen is PINK (hold up the pink
hen)
She goes down to the pond to get a
drink.
All of these hens live at the farm
Out in the big RED barn.
Fluffy Chick:
Print out a chick picture. Have children color it. Then, glue on cotton balls for the fluffy feathers.

Eggs in a basket:
Use a basket and plastic eggs. Place the eggs around the room (or in "nests.") Help children collect the eggs and place them in the basket. Children can then count the eggs or sort them by size/color. For a sound game, put a small amount of flour in 2 eggs, a small amount of rice in 2 eggs, a small amount of beans in 2 eggs. After tightly closing the eggs, have children shake them, try to match the eggs with the same contents, based on sound.
Snack time:
After reading The Little Red Hen, have children help you make bread (or muffins.) Talk about how when everyone helps, work is a lot easier and everyone gets to enjoy the benefits of their labors.
