Christmas, Religious: Day Three

Symbols of Christmas~
The Colors of Christmas, Christmas Plants

Christmas Colors:

The traditional colors of Christmas have meanings related to the Savior.

Red: John 19:34--the blood of Christ
Green: John 3:16-17--eternal life
White: 2 Cor. 5:21--purity
Gold: Rev. 3:18--Divinity, Royalty
Silver: Matthew 27:3-9--Redemption

Sing "White Christmas" or "Silver and Gold"

Discuss places/objects where each of these colors are represented around Christmas time.

Make a "stained glass window" using crayon shavings from the colors of Christmas on waxed paper. Press under a low-setting iron to melt.

Using all the colors of Christmas, paint a picture. Make handprints, footprints, or paint any of the symbols of Christmas you've learned so far. Add glitter in silver and gold to complete the look.

Christmas Plants:

Wreath: John 3:16--circular, eternal, God's love, circle of family.

Sing O, Come All ye Faithful.

Color a picture of a wreath.

Collect items from around your house that are shaped like a circle. Talk about how they are all never-ending, eternal. What qualities of God are like a circle?

Make a handprint wreath, hang a wreath in your home.

Holly: II Corinthians 8:9, Hebrews 12:2, Matthew 27:29--leaves represent the crown of thorns worn by Christ. The berries represent his blood. The evergreen is for eternal life. This represents the completion of the story.

Sing Deck the Halls.

Color a picture of holly.

Place holly around your nativity scene to remind you of the completion of Christ's story.

Make this great recipe: 1 stick of butter, melted in a large pot with some marshmallows--kind of like making Rice Krispie Treats. Add A LOT of green food coloring. When you have a nice green color, remove from heat and stir in about 6 cups of corn flakes. They need to be all covered with the green mixture. Put them out in "clumps" on wax paper and stick a red hot in the middle of each clump. Let them cool. Store in fridge in airtight container. Use to decorate your holiday plate or add to goodie boxes. You will not believe how many compliments you will get on this. If possible, place a little note with them telling about the holly symbol for Christmas.

Poinsettia: Matthew 6:28-30--"Flower of the Holy Night," Mexican legend tells of a little boy who had nothing to give the baby Jesus. He prayed, and a flower grew at his feet. He picked the flower and gave it to Jesus.

Color a picture of poinsettia.

Place poinsettias around your home to remind you to always think of ways you can show your love to Jesus.
