Teeth: Day Four

The Dentist & The Toothfairy

A dentist is a friendly doctor who will help you take care of your teeth.

Read the online story: "Visit the Dentist with Marty."

LEARNING ABOUT THE DENTIST
Plan to do one or more of the activities below with your children.
  • Select appropriate books about the dentist to display and read at circle time.
  • Ask children who have been to the dentist to tell about their experiences.
  • Discuss the importance of regular visits to the dentist or dental health worker.
  • Invite a dentist or dental hygienist to visit your group. Ask him or her to tell what the dentist does and to explain how the children can keep their teeth healthy. (Be sure to let the professional know your children’s ages ahead of time.)

You could use this lesson from the ADA called, "A Visit to the Dentist."

Play Area:
Set up a dentist's office to practice going to the dentist. Have a chair, a mirror, floss, toothbrush, toothpaste, doctor's gloves/mask. Call the "patients" back to sit in the chair, after checking them in at the "front desk."

Go over these "x-rays," which will help with letter recognition.

Coloring Pages:

LEARNING ABOUT THE TOOTH FAIRY

Read The Tooth Book--Dr. Seuss. Make sure to focus on the part about losing your first set of teeth. Tell children that this will happen and that more teeth will grow back.

Read a book about the tooth fairy, such as Franklin and the Tooth Fairy, and discuss her job.

Activities to go along with Franklin and the Tooth Fairy. (Coloring pages, tooth fairy certificate, tooth fairy toilet paper craft.)

Count the Tooth Fairy's Money:
Print out the tooth cards and help children use real coins to make the correct amount of money the tooth fairy should leave for each tooth.

Two people who care a lot about your teeth are the dentist and the tooth fairy. The dentist will help you take care of your teeth and keep them healthy. The tooth fairy takes care of the teeth you lose and gets you excited about growing new ones!
