Teeth: Day One

My Teeth

Purpose: Help children understand the importance of teeth.

Read The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss.

Why do we need teeth? (They help us talk, chew our food, have a beautiful smile.)

Use this lesson from the ADA. "Tiny Teeth do Big Jobs!"

Teeth Model:
Materials:
Paper Plate, red/pink paper, mini-marshmallows, glue

Fold Paper Plate in half. Cut out a tongue shape and glue it in the middle of the plate. Place glue around the edge of the plate and have children glue marshmallows on for the teeth.

Baby Teeth/Permanent Teeth:
Part of the ADA lesson discusses the two sets of teeth we all get..so does The Tooth Book.

Baby Teeth Game:
Materials: die, marshmallows, baby-teeth template.

Give each child a baby-teeth template. Roll the die and have children put in the number of marshmallows to represent the baby's teeth.

Playdough Teeth:
Materials: White playdough, playdough mats.

Have children choose a head. Roll out and cut dough and place the "teeth" inside the mouth of the head.

*Extension: After playing with the softer, baby "teeth," let children glue in chichlet gum inside the mouth to form permanent "teeth."

Happy Teeth Craft:
See here.

Look through magazines/family photo albums for pictures of beautiful smiles. Make a collage with some of the pictures.

Talk about how important our teeth are for helping us talk, eat, and smile.

Smile Snacks:
Materials: red apples, mini-marshmallows, peanut butter.

Slice the apple. Each child gets 2 slices. Spread PB on one slice, then place the other slice on top. Put marshmallows upright between the 2 slices for teeth. Enjoy your edible smile!
